In May 2024, the State Administration Council (SAC) further intensified its oppressive actions, resulting in severe human rights abuses. These included brutal crackdowns on peaceful protests with excessive force, such as tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition, leading to numerous injuries and fatalities. Arbitrary arrests and detentions of activists, journalists, and civilians were widespread, with many subjected to torture and ill-treatment in unknown locations. Targeted killings of political opponents were reported, fostering a climate of fear and repression. Military operations forced entire communities to flee, creating a humanitarian crisis with thousands lacking basic necessities.

The SAC also increased its suppression of free speech, shutting down independent media outlets and imposing internet blackouts to silence opposition and control information. The following video clip highlights the monthly human rights violations by the SAC in May 2024, released in collaboration with partner organizations Youth Empowerment (YE), Women Lead Resource Center (WLRC), and Magway Region Human Rights Network (MHRN). We, the partner organizations, condemn these violations and call on the international community to hold the SAC accountable and support the restoration of democracy and human rights in Myanmar.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_text=”Download our Report Video ” _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” button_url=”https://wlrcmyanmar.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/HRV-May-2024-1.mp4″ hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Since the coup on February 1, 2021, the military junta has consistently violated human rights across Myanmar.
