In February 2024, the State Administration Council (SAC) escalated its oppressive actions, resulting in severe human rights abuses. These included violent crackdowns on peaceful protests using excessive force, such as tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition, causing numerous injuries and fatalities. Arbitrary arrests and detentions of activists, journalists, and civilians were rampant, with many subjected to torture and ill-treatment in undisclosed locations. Reports of targeted killings of political opponents further fostered a climate of fear and repression. Military operations displaced entire communities, leading to a humanitarian crisis with thousands lacking basic necessities.

The SAC also intensified its suppression of free speech, shutting down independent media outlets and imposing internet blackouts to silence opposition and control information. This video clip highlights the human rights violations by the SAC in February 2024, produced in collaboration with Youth Empowerment (YE), Women Lead Resource Center (WLRC), and Magway Region Human Rights Network (MHRN). We, the partner organizations, condemn these violations and call on the international community to hold the SAC accountable and support the restoration of democracy and human rights in Myanmar.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_text=”Download our Video” _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” button_url=”https://wlrcmyanmar.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/17.-HRV-Feb-2024.mp4″ hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Since the coup on February 1, 2021, the military junta has persistently violated human rights across Myanmar.
